Revelation as the source of historical purpose.

The fullest understanding of causes comes in understanding why things happen, and the fullest understanding of why is in seeing the purposes of things. In this sense, only God can understand the causes of history, and the extent of his knowledge, and the causality that attends this knowledge, is most manifest in his ability to know things historically. Through faith we assert that we can take part in this knowledge, because we can we know the purpose of Christ’s birth, and the purpose of all the pains he had to suffer- but we are only kidding ourselves, or imagining things, if we think we can see the distinct purpose of our own birth, or our own suffering by our own lights. Seen by our own lights, there simply is no purpose for these things. Christ, and the events of Scripture in general, are our only window into the purposes of history, and if we do not find our purposes there, we do not find them at all.
