If we view natural selection as a historical account we might wonder about any historical account that tries to explain everything by a single mechanism. We are no longer naive enough to expect universal silver-bullet historical explanations of something as complex as, say, a major war. Why do we expect them of all of the biosphere? Is that easier to play on than a pipe?

We have to choose between modest, skeptical, evidence-based science and the alchemical transmutations of, say, some neo-Darwinian elements in explanation into Darwinism (the methodological or ontological claim that we can exclude all non-Darwinian processes.)
