Left and Right (pt. 2)

If the peace of your polis isn’t seen as a co-operative effort with the gods, then you’re left insisting that the only peace you can count on is either (a) the result of good planning and rational control or (b) arises spontaneously if you leave persons to themselves. Any attempt to harmonize the two is itself the result of either (a) or (b), and so is not a third alternative.

For those who see the work of the polis as a co-operation with the gods, both (a) and (b) are aspects of politics, though the flaw in both of them cannot be remedied by attempting to play the one off the other. A part is not equal to the work of a whole.
