Account of Cause

Cause: the pre-existence(s) of something.

True in a strightforward sense of matter, agent, and end (also chance and luck).

Not true of form as opposed to exemplar or end, but this opposition does not make for a real division in form.

Leads us to see the old distinction between “intrinsic” and “extrinsic causes” as a distinction between those that merely pre-exist, and those that pre-exist and continue through existence.
